Oregon State Beavers' Pac-12 losing streak reaches 13 after loss to Cal: Live updates recap

The California Golden Bears emphatically snapped their 14-game Pac-12 losing streak with a 49-7 blowout victory against the Oregon State Beavers on Saturday at Reser Stadium.

Meanwhile, the Beavers' Pac-12 futility stretched to 13 games, a losing streak that dates to the 2016 Civil War against Oregon.

The Beavers never got their offense going on a sunny Homecoming Saturday in Corvallis. OSU lost starting quarterback Conor Blount to an injury late in the second quarter, and Jack Colletto didn't fare much better for the Beavers. He went 11 of 20 for 104 yards and an interception and also ran in OSU's only score late in the third quarter.

Here's a recap of how the game unfolded:

Live score: Cal 49, Oregon State 7, 4th quarter

Fourth quarter updates: Josh Drayden just put the exclamation point onto the Golden Bears' victory, intercepting Jack Colletto and returning it 54 yards for the touchdown in the closing seconds of the game. Cal 49, Oregon State 7

Cal's Patrick Laird bursts free for a 30-yard touchdown run that puts up Cal 42-7 with 3:26 to play. Cal 42, Oregon State 7

The Beavers' drive starts with a false start, a B.J. Baylor run that loses 3 yards, and then a 7-yard pass to Isaiah Hodgins. On third and 11, Jack Colletto scrambles but is dropped for a loss. The Beavers punt it away. Cal 35, Oregon State 7

Kanawai Noa takes the pass from Chase Garbers and runs it in for the 29-yard touchdown. Cal goes back up four scores with 9:44 left. The drive goes 50 yards in six plays. Cal 35, Oregon State 7

Cal starts the fourth quarter facing third and 8 from its own 42. The Bears don't get the first down and punt it away to OSU. The Beavers take over at their own 13. A holding penalty pushes back OSU, then B.J. Baylor runs it out to the 15. On third and 9, Colletto's pass is incomplete, and the Beavers will punt with 12:35 to go. Cal is called for running into the kicker, but the Beavers decline it because it would not have resulted in a first down. Cal takes over at the 50. Cal 28, Oregon State 7

Third quarter updates: The Golden Bears run it to Patrick Laird three times in a row, and he picks up 1, 11 and 13 yards. After a Chase Garbers incompletion, Cal goes back to Laird, who picks up 2 on the final play of the third quarter. Cal 28, Oregon State 7

Oregon State tries for the onside kick, and the Beavers recover it. So OSU has it from its own 46-yard line. Jack Colletto keeps it on a draw play and picks up 11 yards. Then Colletto is sacked on the next play. The OSU drive goes just four plays, and ends with a Daniel Rodriguez punt. Cal takes over at its own 15. Cal 28, Oregon State 7

The Beavers put together a solid drive, and convert a fourth down in the red zone as Jack Colletto finds Artavis Pierce on a nice pass play in the flat. Pierce dived for the pylon, and this might be overturned and ruled a touchdown on review. The call is confirmed, and so it's first and goal for OSU from the 1-yard line. Colletto sneaks it in, and the Beavers get on the board with 3:40 to go in the third quarter. The extra point is good. The drive went 64 yards in 12 plays. Cal 28, Oregon State 7

Cal starts at the OSU 44. The Bears go three-and-out, but OSU's Isaiah Tufaga is shaken up on the third-down stop. Cal actually goes for it on fourth down, but the Beavers bottle up Patrick Laird and take over on downs. Cal 28, Oregon State 0

The Beavers cross midfield on their drive, but then they go for it on fourth down and Jack Colletto is dropped for a sack. The Bears take over on downs. Cal 28, Oregon State 0

Patrick Laird gets loose for a 53-yard run on the Bears' first play from scrimmage in the second half. Chris Brown finishes off the drive three plays later, and the Golden Bears take a 28-0 lead on OSU. Cal 28, Oregon State 0

Second quarter updates: After a short gain on a screen pass to Trevon Bradford, Conor Blount takes off on the scramble and picks up good yardage, out to the 30. He is hit in the head on his slide, and Cal's Jaylin Hawkins is whistled for targeting. Blount remains down on the field. Now Blount is up and walks off the field. Jack Colletto comes in at QB for the Beavers. As Blount heads to the locker room, Colletto throws incomplete to Noah Togiai. And now OSU has 5 seconds left in the half. OSU takes a timeout. The Beavers try a multiple lateral play on the final play of the half, but Colletto throws an illegal forward pass, and the half ends. Cal 21, Oregon State 0

Cal's drive starts at its own 41 with 1:26 to go in the half. A screen to Laird goes for a first down, across the 50. Then Garbers throws incomplete. Jaydon Grant breaks up the third-down pass play, and Cal punts it to OSU with 1:04 to go. The Beavers take over at their own 10 with 56 seconds left in the half. Cal 21, Oregon State 0

Jermar Jefferson finally gives the OSU offense a little life, with a 33-yard run down the right sideline to midfield. But then a penalty and incompletion leave OSU facing third and 16. Blount throws back across his body, and Cal's Traveon Beck picks it off for the interception at the Cal 41. Cal 21, Oregon State 0

Cal is driving again. Patrick Laird with an impressive run, leaping over an OSU defender, and down to the Beavers' 6-yard line. A couple of plays later, Laird runs left and dives into the end zone for the score with 2:50 to play in the half. The Bears now have a 297-48 advantage in total yards. Cal 21, Oregon State 0

The Beavers simply go backwards on their drive, with a sack to Conor Blount, a 1-yard run to Jemar Jefferson and then an incompletion. The OSU offense is really struggling today, with just 48 total yards so far. Cal 14, Oregon State 0

Cal needs just three plays to score the Bears' second touchdown of the day. Patrick Laird gets loose on the wheel route, and he scores from 29 yards away. Cal 14, Oregon State 0

The Beavers start at their own 2 after the big turnover. But OSU is bottled up and Daniel Rodriguez has to punt from his own end zone. Cal takes over at the OSU 40 after the punt. Cal 7, Oregon State 0

Cal faces second and 2 to start the second quarter. Chris Brown runs up the middle and picks up the first down, to the Cal 20. A couple of plays later, QB Chase Garbers finds Kanawai Noa for a 25-yard pass up the middle. After an incompletion, the Bears try a reverse, and it goes nowhere as Isaiah Tufaga drops him for a loss. But on a third and 13 keeper, Garbers picks up 20, down to the OSU 23. Cal drives into the red zone on Patrick Laird's 7-yard run. Then Laird gets it again and picks up the first down to the OSU 12. Another Laird run, and Cal is down to the 5-yard line. Garbers throws to the end zone, but it's incomplete to Moe Ways. On third and 4, Brandon McIlwain keeps it and on his second effort he picks up the first down. It's first and goal for Cal. Then Cal fumbles the snap, and OSU recovers at their own 2-yard line. It's turnover chainsaw time for the Beavers. Andrzej Hughes-Murray with the recovery. Cal 7, Oregon State 0

First quarter updates: Conor Blount flips the pass to Trevon Bradford, and he turns it upfield for a gain of 24, near midfield. Then the Beavers try a reverse to Bradford, and he loses 4 yards. The Beavers' drive stalls, and OSU punts it away. After one play on Cal's drive, the quarter ends. Cal 7, Oregon State 0

On third and 7, Cal's Chase Garbers throws for a first down, out to the Cal 42. Then, Garbers throws deep and complete to Vic Wharton, a 55-yard gain down inside the OSU 5-yard line. Garbers on the rollout, throws complete to Malik McMorris for the 3-yard touchdown. The extra point is good, and Cal goes up 7-0 with 2:39 to go in the first quarter. Cal 7, Oregon State 0

Cal starts its drive with a Patrick Laird run, and then an incomplete pass. Laird picks up the first down on a run, out to the Cal 17-yard line. Later in the drive, on third and 6, the Beavers pressure QB Chase Garbers, and he has to throw it away. The Bears punt it back to OSU. But then OSU goes three-and-out, and the Bears get their second possession with 4:40 to go in the first quarter. Oregon State 0, Cal 0

The Beavers get the ball first after Cal defers. Quarterback Conor Blount and running back Artavis Pierce get the start for OSU. After Pierce picks up a first down, the Beavers are whistled for illegal hands to the face. The Beavers face third and 21, and the screen pass to Pierce goes for five or six yards. But a roughing the passer penalty gives OSU a first down. A few plays later, Pierce gets stopped short near midfield. OSU keeps its offense on the field on fourth and 1, and the Beavers pick it up on the QB sneak. Cal sacks Blount, setting up a third and 19, and the pass to Timmy Hernandez is well short. OSU punts from its own 41, and it's downed at the Cal 3-yard line. The Beavers pin the Bears deep. Oregon State 0, Cal 0

What's at stake

With an extra week to prepare, can the Beavers make enough improvement on defense to matter against a Pac-12 team? Something's got to give in this area, too: a Cal team that has coughed up 14 turnovers in three Pac-12 games, against the league's worst takeaway unit in OSU. The showdown of the game appears to be Oregon State's running game, featuring Pac-12 rushing leader Jermar Jefferson, against a Bears' run defense that had been solid before facing UCLA a week ago.
