Fire closes Knoxville solid waste facility on Elm Street

Knoxville firefighters battled a blaze at the back of the city's Solid Waste Transfer Facility on Thursday night. 

The fire was first reported at 8:44 p.m. at the facility, located at 1033 Elm Street, according to Knox County E-911 records.

An hour later, Knoxville Fire Department crews had apparently knocked down the flames. 

"Due to a fire that occurred Thursday evening, the City’s Solid Waste Management Facility, 1033 Elm St, will be closed Friday, March 16," Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero said in a tweet last night. "The closure will remain in effect until City workers are able to assess and properly clear any damages that occurred inside the Transfer Station."

A KFD spokesman did not immediately return a request for more information Thursday night.
