Davis stabbings trial | Jurors enter 2nd week of testimony in Carlos Dominguez case
A jury of 18 began a second week of hearing testimony in the case of Carlos Reales Dominguez, the former UC Davis student accused of serial stabbings in 2023.Prosecutors Matthew DeMoura and Frits Van Der Hoek are making the case that Dominguez committed the attacks with premeditation, having been disgruntled with life. Court proceedings begin at 9:30 a.m., and there is typically a lunch break from noon to 1:30 p.m. Watch the trial live in the video player above as it happens. See live courtroom updates belowAmong their key witnesses so far include the sole survivor of the attacks, first responders involved in the initial investigation, and a doctor who tried resuscitating one of the victims killed.Meanwhile, Dominguez's defense attorney Daniel Hutchinson has not outright denied the attacks but emphasized that the defendant was in florid psychosis and was not aware that he committed the stabbings. Hutchinson, during his opening statements, told jurors the story of an immigrant from El Salvador who was a bright student-athlete whose mental wellness and hygiene declined after starting college at UC Davis. On May 12, the first one on the witness stand was Megan Wood, a criminalist with the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office. She was part of the stabbings investigation, processing DNA for the slain victims, UC Davis student Karim About Najm and "Compassion Guy" David Breaux.Wood said one of the items she processed was a protective sheath found at the scene of Breaux's stabbing. She also analyzed Abou Najm's fingernail scrapings and a water bottle.Another notable witness on May 12 was Megan Silverlake, who works for the FBI Sacramento chapter as a field photographer. She took photos of Dominguez's Hawthorne Lane home on May 4, 2023, following his arrest.Dominguez, during much of the trial, has remained near motionless, blankly staring at graphic evidence presented to jurors and during witness testimony from people who said they encountered him.Evidence shown so far includes photos of the two slain men, a knife believed to have been used in the stabbings that was sent to the Department of Justice for DNA processing and 911 audio calls. A forensics expert also testified that Dominguez's search history included images of knives and makeshift memorials.Hutchinson also spent time cross-examining claims made by Kimberlee Guillory, the third person attacked before Davis police arrested Dominguez in connection with the attacks.Guillory at the witness stand said she was in a tent near 2nd and L streets with her back against the fabric when she felt what she thought initially was a punch. She screamed for help seconds later, prompting her friends who were nearby to rush to her aid.She said she briefly made eye contact with the man she identified to be Dominguez, noting a look of anger in his eyes. However, the defense pointed out that the statement conflicts with one she made earlier when she said she had never seen his face before. Abou Najm was coming home from an awards ceremony when he was stabbed 12 times and cut 40 times at Sycamore Park. Dr. Matthew Massie, who lived nearby, heard screams and rushed to find out what was happening. That's when he came across Abou Najm bleeding on the floor and Dominguez, who was fleeing using Abou Najm's bike.Breaux's sister also testified at the witness stand, emphasizing to jurors his life mission to ask people what their definition of compassion was. He was sleeping on a bench when he suffered 31 knife wounds.Dominguez faces two murder charges and an attempted murder charge. If convicted, prosecutors said they would not seek the death penalty. While the trial is expected to last 10 weeks, things may be moving faster than expected. Attorneys on Monday said the prosecution may rest as early as Friday.Previous coverage since opening statements began belowDay 1: Opening statementsDay 2: Testimony regarding two men killedDay 3: Survivor speaksDay 4: Witness who followed Carlos Dominguez testifiesDay 5: Knife presented to jurorsSee more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app | Subscribe to our morning newsletter | Find us on YouTube here and subscribe to our channel
