Missouri, Mississippi River water level updates

An atmospheric scientist says water levels along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers could be a concern later in the growing season.

Matt Makens tells Brownfield that’s due to a disappointing winter snowpack. “A lot of snow wasn’t expected across the northern states. That just happens with El Nino that you’re going to have less snow than normal.”

He says heavy and adequate rains over the next six weeks is greatly needed. “We have some chances of that, but the farther north you go, more of the river issues will be apparent throughout this season.”

The Soy Transportation Coalition says levels along the Mississippi River have rebounded from last fall’s extremely low conditions, but a prolonged period of dry weather this spring and summer could eliminate those gains.
