LUXEMBOURG PRISON -  A new prison for remand prisoners officially opens near Suessem today. By March next year, all the remand prisoners from Schrassig should be transferred here. The new prison has room for around 400 inmates.

PETROL PRICES - From today, fuel prices will drop once more. A litre of petrol will cost around 4 cents less, as prices continue their gradual decline. Diesel will fall for the fifth consecutive time, dropping by 3.7 cents to €1.62 per litre, SP95 petrol will drop to just under €1.50 per litre and SP98 petrol will drop to €1.71 per litre.

World

BELGIUM TERROR TRIAL - After six and a half years, Brussels will host its biggest ever criminal trial, starting today. Jury selection begins ahead of hearings into the charges against the alleged jihadists accused of taking part in the March 2016 suicide bombings at Brussels Zaventem airport and Brussels metro station. Nine people have been charged in total, including the French Islamist Salah Abdeslam, who has already been sentenced to life imprisonment in France for the attacks in Paris. Hundreds of witnesses and victims will testify in the months to come.

MACRON US - French President Emmanuel Macron is on a 3-day state visit to the USA. Macron and his wife Brigitte arrived late last night for their first formal state visit to the White House during the Biden presidency. US officials said the choice of France for the honor reflects their historic links and also the crucial role played by Paris, within the European Union, in the alliance confronting Russia over Ukraine.

EU  PACKAGING - The European Commission is due to propose a new law to tackle packaging waste today. Companies will have to ensure containers can be reused and measures will affect a range of sectors from food to chemicals. The Commission is now targeting Nespresso capsules and single-use plastic bottles in its bid to reduce waste and boost the sustainability of packaging materials.The regulations aim to reinforce and promote sustainability in packaging, one of the largest sources of non-recycled plastic and paper. In the EU, around 40% of plastic and 50% of paper is used in packaging, with packaging design often making reuse or recycling difficult.

VOLCANO ERUPTION - Fountains of lava up to 60 meters high have been fired into the air from Hawaii's Mauna Loa, generating rivers of molten rock from the world's largest active volcano.Four fissures have now opened up on the mammoth mountain, which burst into life on Sunday for the first time in almost 40 years. Vast clouds of steam and smoke were billowing into the sky from the volcano, which makes up half of Hawaii's Big Island.

Sports

WORLD CUP - England and the USA qualified for the knock out rounds last night. England won 3-0 against Wales. And the USA beat Iran 1-0. Today's games are Australia-Denmark, France-Tunisia, Poland-Argentina and Saudi Arabia against Mexico.

WORLD CUP REFEREE - Stephanie Frappart will become the first woman to referee a men's World Cup match after FIFA announced on Tuesday that she will take charge of Thursday's Group E match between Germany and Costa Rica. For the 38-year-old Frappart, refereeing her men's World Cup match is the latest step in a rapid rise to the top level in Europe.

We bid farewell to November today beneath more overcast skies, with relatively mild conditions before the promised cold snap at the end of the week.Some areas might experience drizzle to accompany the morning mists, but largely, today will be dry beneath a grey cloudy sky. Morning temperatures will start off at 4-6°C, rising slightly to 6-8°C in the afternoon.
