10 more units in city soon for wet waste processing
Noida: More facilities to process wet waste will be established in the city soon. At present, the Noida Authority is running 13 plants where wet waste is being treated that include eight composting and five biomethanation plants. Three more composting and seven methanation plants will be set up within a month.
Currently, the Authority can treat only 16,650 kg of wet waste which is much lower than the wet waste generated daily.
The Authority is planning to augment the capacity of the biomethanation plants that can tackle more waste and yield renewable energy in the form of gas.
The composting plants generate manure and fertiliser that is used for horticulture purposes. Out of the 900 - 950 metric tonne of waste that is generated in the city, a third is wet. The Authority has engaged four agencies to operate the wet waste plants. The vendors have been given certain residential blocks and collect the segregated wet waste from these sectors from the households.
“Only non-biodegradable wet waste is handed over to the agency engaged for doorstep waste collection in the city which takes it to the landfill site in Sector 145. The collection work within sectors is done by the agencies responsible for running the biomethanation plants,” said Rakesh Gupta, partner of Waste Management Corporation, which runs biomethane plant in Sector 52, which treats 2,500 kg of waste daily.
An officer on special duty (OSD) of Noida Authority, Avinash Tripathi, said sectors 26, 51 and 100 are some pockets where methanation plants have to be set up. “We want to make more and more resident welfare associations (RWAs) self-sustainable in tackling their waste. Wet waste treatment facilities will be developed to cover a maximum number of residential blocks in Noida,” he added.
The Authority pays Rs 51 lakh for setting up a methanation plant.
