RALEIGH, N.C. — On Saturday, hundreds of thousands are expected to take over the streets of Washington, D.C, demanding an end to gun violence and mass school shootings.

Many North Carolina students and adults will be traveling north to the protest, which will start on Pennsylvania Avenue between 3rd St. and 12th St. NW at 12 p.m.

After a social media threat caused Raleigh’s Broughton High School to postpone its student walkout on March 14, one month after the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, many teenage activists are preparing to attend the national rally.

A group of students from Broughton, Enloe Magnet High School and other Wake County schools gathered this week to make signs to hold in Washington, D.C.

Among the messages: “Thoughts & Prayers Don’t Save Lives. Gun Reform Will” and “Never Again.”

Daryl Quick is sponsoring students from Durham to travel to Washington, D.C.

"These kids in Durham really need to have a voice in this and say what's going on and how they feel about it," he said.

For those who can’t make it to the nation’s capital, around 835 individual events have been organized worldwide with around 20 protests planned in North Carolina communities.
