Garowe (HOL) — Puntland police have arrested a man accused of abducting and raping two young sisters in a case that has triggered public outrage and renewed scrutiny of Somalia’s weak judicial protections for survivors of sexual violence.

The suspect, Sharmaake Hussein Yusuf, 31, was taken into custody on Wednesday night during a planned police operation. Officers said he was driving a vehicle believed to have been used in the May 11 attack, which occurred around 4 a.m. in the Booray neighbourhood on the southeastern outskirts of Garowe.

The two girls, from an underprivileged family, were found in distress at the scene, showing signs of physical and sexual assault. Police said Yusuf faces multiple charges including rape, abduction, and assault. Two additional vehicles suspected to be linked to the incident were also impounded.

Yusuf is being held at the West Garowe Police Station while authorities continue their investigation.

“This is a heinous crime that cannot be tolerated,” Puntland’s government said in a statement. “The suspect and anyone found to be complicit will be held accountable in accordance with the law.”

On Tuesday, the victims’ family appealed publicly for justice, describing the assault as a “monstrous act” and urging authorities to act swiftly.

While cases of sexual violence in Somalia are often underreported and rarely prosecuted, this case has attracted particular attention because of the age and vulnerability of the victims. Rights groups have long criticized the country’s legal system for failing to protect women and girls, especially in rural or underserved communities.

Puntland officials have promised a full investigation and said those responsible will face trial through formal judicial channels.
