SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) – After Summerville residents voiced concerns about their recycling and trash service, Town Council decided to send a notice to cure to the town’s waste management provider, Waste Pro.

“Council has found that Waste Pro is in breach of their contract,”said Councilwoman Chrstine Czarnik. “We have instructed the town attorney to give them a notice to cure the deficencies in service and we’re hopeful that they’ll get back on track.”

Residents have noted several issues with Waste Pro pickup. Some say they have witnessed trash and recycling being combined in the same truck. Others have not received a new 95-gallon recycling roll cart for the town’s single-stream recycling program. And in some areas trash has reportedly not being picked up in three weeks.

Town Council discussed Waste Pro contractual matters in executive session during a special meeting on Friday before voting to send the notice to cure letter.

Waste Pro told News 2 that the issue is that recycling is frequently being contaminated so it has to go in the trash truck. The company also said they are behind schedule on recycling and trash pickup because of the recent winter storm. The company expects to be back on schedule by the end of the day on Jan. 20.

The waste management company said that approximately 14,800 roll carts have been distributed in Summerville. 200 more still have to be delivered. The company brought in a crew that will be dedicated to cart delivery.

Waste Pro’s new contract with the town went into effect on Jan. 1.
